Introduction

Most people considering Invisalign have been thinking about it for longer than they would admit. They have looked at the Instagram before-and-afters. They have googled the price at midnight. They have wondered whether they are too old, whether it will hurt, whether people will notice.

Then nothing happens, because the questions feel small and the appointments feel like a big commitment.

This post is for those people. It covers what patients at Allure Dental in Barnet actually ask before they start, including the things they are sometimes reluctant to bring up in a consultation room.

“Am I too old for Invisalign?”

This is the question adults ask more than any other, and the answer is no.

Invisalign works on adult teeth at any age, as long as your gums and bone are healthy enough to support tooth movement. A consultation and scan will check that. The patients who tend to do best with clear aligners are adults, because adults wear them consistently. The compliance problem that affects teenagers wearing fixed braces is much less common in adults who have chosen to do this for themselves.

At Allure Dental, Dr Nutan Thakkar is the Invisalign specialist. She has worked with patients across a wide age range, and the conversation at your free consultation is straightforward: here is what we see on the scan, here is whether Invisalign is the right tool for your situation, and here is what the result would look like.

What the free consultation at Allure actually involves

A lot of “free consultations” are a quick chat followed by a treatment quote. The one at Allure Dental is a proper appointment.

You get a free scan using the iTero digital scanner. This produces a 3D model of your teeth in real time. You can see your current alignment on screen, and Dr Thakkar can show you a simulation of where your teeth would be after treatment. The scan is worth £350. The appointment is booked with no obligation.

That simulation matters more than most people expect. Seeing a realistic projection of the end result makes the decision clearer. You are not committing to anything based on a vague description.

Invisalign versus fixed braces: a straight comparison

There is no version of this answer where one option is always better. It depends on the problem being corrected and the person being treated.

Fixed braces are more effective for complex tooth movements, severe crowding, or cases where precise control over every tooth is needed. The wires and brackets do the work whether or not the patient remembers to wear them.

Invisalign works well for mild to moderate crowding, gaps, and mild bite issues. The aligners are removable, which means you can eat normally, clean your teeth properly, and not worry about brackets catching on things. The catch is that you need to wear them for twenty to twenty-two hours a day. If they come out at breakfast and do not go back in until dinner, the treatment plan falls behind.

For most adults presenting at Allure with typical crowding or spacing concerns, Invisalign is a good fit. But if your case is more complex, Dr Thakkar will say so. The clinic also offers fixed orthodontic options.

What does Invisalign treatment actually look like week to week?

You get a set of aligners, each worn for one to two weeks before moving to the next set. Each new set moves your teeth a fraction of a millimetre further along the planned path.

You visit Allure every six to eight weeks for a check. The appointments are short because there is nothing to tighten or adjust. Dr Thakkar checks that teeth are tracking correctly, hands you the next sets of aligners, and you leave.

The total length of treatment varies by case. Mild corrections can be done in six months. More involved cases run twelve to eighteen months. The iTero scan gives a reasonable estimate of timing before you start, so you are not going in blind.

Does it hurt?

Honest answer: the first couple of days with each new aligner, you feel pressure. Some people describe it as an ache. It is not the same as the soreness from tightened wire braces, which can be sharp and last longer. Most patients say they barely notice the aligners after the first week, and the discomfort from each new set reduces as treatment progresses.

If something is catching or a sharp edge is irritating your cheek, you call the practice. That is not a normal thing to push through.

Will people know I am wearing them?

Clear aligners are not invisible in every light. Under a bright office ceiling, close up, someone paying attention may notice. In normal social situations, most patients find that nobody mentions it. The aligners are thin and fit closely to the teeth.

If you are worried about a specific event, the aligners come out. Job interview, wedding, important presentation. You get two hours back in the day.

What about cost and spreading payments?

Invisalign pricing in London varies a lot, partly because the complexity of the case affects how many aligner stages are needed, and partly because practices price differently.

At Allure Dental, fees are set out in the fee guide on their website. Finance options are available, which means you can spread the cost over twelve or twenty-four months rather than paying upfront. If you have received a written quote from another registered clinic for the same treatment, Allure’s beat-your-quote policy applies here too.

The free consultation is the right place to get a treatment-specific figure. There is no point comparing headline prices across practices without knowing whether the quote covers the same scope.

What happens after treatment?

Teeth move back if they are not retained. This is not specific to Invisalign. It happens with fixed braces too. After treatment, you wear a retainer at night. Most patients wear a thin clear retainer long-term, which fits easily over the teeth and does not interfere with sleep.

The retainer is part of the treatment outcome. If a clinic does not discuss retention before you start, ask about it.

Ready to see what your teeth could look like?

The scan takes about fifteen minutes. You leave with a realistic picture of what treatment would involve, what the result would look like, and what it would cost in your specific case. There is no pressure to decide anything on the day.
